Family Halloween Movies
It seems like when I grew up, there were Charlie Brown movies for all the holidays and Halloween was no exception. This Charlie Brown special came out in 1966.
This movie is about Charlie Brown and his friends who are all getting ready to go out trick-or-treating. Linus spends the night in a pumpkin patch because of a story about the "The Great Pumpkin".
A lot of times you can find this special playing on TV, Netflix or Amazon Prime Video
My brother in law actually worked on making this movie. It ties stop-motion and computer animation together for a really cool effect. It came out in 2009 and has a similar feel to Nightmare Before Christmas.
This movie is better for kids who are slightly older, maybe 10+.
Coraline is based on a novel written by Neil Gaiman. This scary book was meant for children and teens.
It is about a girl named Coraline, who has moved into an apartment and is bored. She ends up in another world that is almost identical to the world she originally lived in.
At first, she loves her new world, but she soon realizes that she needs to get back to her world. My description is very mild compared to the actual movie. The movie is dark and creepy.
Hocus Pocus came out in 1993 and stars Bette Middler and Sarah Jessica Parker. This movie is fun, not too scary, and is family-friendly.
This movie is about three sisters who are evil witches and live in Salem. They come back to life hundreds of years after their death when a couple of kids accidentally resurrects them.
This Halloween-themed Winnie the Pooh movie called Pooh’s Heffalump Movie is perfect for the younger kids.
Join Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and the rest of the gang as they have a Halloween adventure in the Hundred Acre Woods.
All the Harry Potter movies are great for watching at Halloween.
If you don’t know who Harry Potter is, he is an 11-year-old boy who finds out he is a wizard and then goes to Hogwarts, which is a school for wizards.
He has many adventures at this school. I wouldn’t’ consider the first several of the movies in this series scary, although there are ghosts and such in these.
This was one of my favorite movies growing up.
This is a movie about a girl and her dad who move into an old mansion. The mansion has ghosts haunting it!
One of these ghosts is Casper, who is friendly and becomes friends with the girl.
This movie is based on the Roald Dahl book “The Witches”. It is slightly creepy, but everything from Roald Dahl is.
It’s about a boy who goes on holiday with his Grandmother. There is a witch convention at the hotel they are staying at and the witches don't like kids.
This is one of my kids’ favorite movies of all time.
Ghosts invade NYC and it’s up to the Ghostbusters to get rid of them.
Ernest is trying to save the world from an evil troll on Halloween. Be prepared to laugh…a lot!
Twin sisters try to save their family finances by going on a Halloween expedition.
Beetlejuice isn't necessarily a Halloween movie, but it is one that is somewhat creepy, is about a ghost, yet it isn't too scary. This is a great movie for tweens and older.
The Adventures of Ichabod is the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and a great movie to watch around Halloween.
My kids have all loved the Curious George movies and this movie is no exception.
Curious George is solving a mystery of "No-Noggin" a ghost who steals everyone's hats. This isn't a scary movie at all and is great for little kids.
Make sure to also check Netflix for this movie. We have watched it several times over the years on there.
This is a fun, "spooky" Halloween movie. It's not the greatest movie out there, but it might just surprise you and how much you enjoy watching it.
Shrek's friends all tell scary stories trying to scare Shrek.
This is currently not available for streaming, but you can pick up the DVD here. Make sure to also check Netflix for this movie, we've watched this on there in years past.
