I love advent calendars and my kids do as well!

There is so much excitement around Christmas time and having a surprise each day adds to the fun!  It’s a great holiday tradition to have.

Plus, it stops the constant “how many days until Christmas?” questions that seem incessant this time of year.  It’s easy to have them look at the advent calendar and count how many days are left.

There are so many different options for advent calendars.  One way to truly make the tradition special is by making your own advent calendar.

Luckily, making your own DIY advent calendar is easier than you may think. This rustic advent calendar sign is so simple to make, everyone in your family can get in on the fun!

And after your kids help put this project together, they’ll have a blast opening the packages each day as they count down the days until Christmas.

Finding the perfect “prizes” to add to each bag is another part of the fun.

The options are endless, from small little toys such as these ones to little bite-size pieces of candy.  You can also choose to put in paper with fun Advent calendar activities on them.  Make sure the toy or candy will fit in the bags your purchased.

Making your own advent calendar sign is so easy. And you only need a few simple supplies to put this fun project together.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own farmhouse advent calendar:
• Blank wooden sign (18×32 inch sign)
• Merry Christmas wood cutout
• White paint
• Red paint
• Jute twine
Staple gun
• Brown paper favor bags
Mini clothespins
• Washi tape
• Number stickers

How to Make This DIY Advent Calendar

Start by painting the blank wooden sign with white paint and the Merry Christmas wood cutout with red paint. Set both aside and allow to dry completely before you start putting your advent calendar together.

While the paint is drying, take the time to fill each favor bag for your advent calendar.

Candy is always a popular option for advent calendars, but there are so many great ways to fill your advent calendar bags. Whether you add small toys or fun notes to the bag, make sure you include items that are special to your family. After adding the prizes to the inside of each bag, fold the top over and set the bags aside.

After the paint is dry on the blank wooden sign, it’s time to attach the twine to the sign so you can hang your treat bags on the advent calendar.

Flip the sign over and attach the end of a string of twine to the back of the sign using a staple gun. After stapling the end of the string to the back of the sign, tie a knot around the staple to secure the string. Continue attaching twine to the sign until you have six rows of string on the sign.

Finish by flipping the sign back over and attaching the Merry Christmas wood cutout to the top of the sign with glue.
